Solar Hydrogen Company, recently formed, has announced a system for producing hydrogen, breaking the water directly from sunlight. The device, called the Tandem Cell, has been developed by Michael Grätzel and collaborators. The system is based on the use of two photosystems nanocrystalline connected in series (Fig. 6). A thin film of tungsten trioxide, WO3, Fe2O3 or serves as an absorber of sunlight in the region
ultraviolet-blue solar spectrum. The second photosystem consists of a nanocrystalline TiO2 solar cell in sensitive dye as described above. Photosystem latter is disposed below the previous one to absorb the radiation corresponding to the green and red solar spectrum. The combination of the two cells provides the potential to dissociate the water molecules in the electrolyte.
